- ANANDA MICHIGAN is an outreach of the greater Ananda Self-Realization Meditation Centers Worldwide. Activities in Michigan include ongoing classes in "How to Meditate;" Sunday Morning Meditation and Worship Services; weekly and monthly Meditations; Kriya Yoga teaching and counseling; monthly Kirtans; (yoga-style group chanting - kirtan) and other classes in the Kriya Yoga tradition. We also offer various other special ceremonies, special events, private meditation training and occasional retreats.
Ananda Worldwide is a thriving worldwide movement dedicated to living and sharing with others the meditation and yoga teachings of Paramhansa Yogananda. Ananda was founded by Swami Kriyananda (J. Donald Walters), a direct disciple of Yogananda. Ananda Worldwide includes spiritual communities in America, Europe and India, with hundreds of resident members. (The word "ananda" means a state of profound inner joy, bliss, and peace.) Ananda Michigan meets in the Detroit area, Lansing area and in St. Clair County.
Paramhansa Yogananda was a great Indian master of yoga who lived and taught in the United States from 1920 until his passing in 1952. He is probably most well-known as the author of the best-selling spiritual classic "Autobiography of a Yogi". Yogananda first lectured in Michigan in 1926 and he returned often. It was during a return visit in the 1930s that he met one of his greatest disiples, J. Oliver Black. Mr. Black was a successful Detroit Area auto magnate who, through Yogananda's training, also became highly advanced in meditation and yoga. It was due to Oliver Black's magnetic influence and inspiration that Ananda Michigan eventually came into existence.
The founder of Ananda Michigan is Lorne Dekun. Lorne has been practicing meditation in the Kriya Yoga tradition since 1968. His primary teachers were three Direct-Disciples of Yogananda: Yogacharyas J. Oliver Black, Bernard Cole, and Swami Kriyananda (see below).
