Deepening Your Understanding of the Yoga Postures with Martha Limauro

8 Week Course
Tuesday evenings, 7:00pm-8:00pm
April 19 through June 7, 2022

Many people think of yoga primarily in terms of physical postures and exercises (Hatha Yoga). Yoga postures (asanas) are about energy (prana), and people often underestimate their true power and deep healing. You will develop and build your asana practice from the ground up. By understanding first the correct form and technique of each posture, you will be guided from the physical to the energetic, emotional, and psychological aspects of each posture. You will move beyond the physical to part of your consciousness that allows you to witness, understand, and release limiting beliefs.

This course is designed so that each posture is demonstrated pointing out the common mistakes and pitfalls of each one. Then you will practice the posture as it is narrated to you step by step, and layer upon layer. At the end of this course, you will have in-depth knowledge of over 40 postures. This course will benefit people who are beginners as well as experienced yogis who want to deepen their understanding and healing benefits of the postures. Even those with physical limitations will benefit from this course.

Here are the dates and descriptions for each class:

Lessons in Meditation, Step One on the Path of Kriya Yoga
Wednesday evenings, 7:30pm-9:00pm
January 18 and January 25, 2023

This 2 week series provides in-depth instruction in scientific meditation techniques that bring more peace, deeper relaxation, and focused concentration to every area of your life. Whether you are a beginner or already have a meditation practice established, this program will enhance your ability to access inner peace, calmness and joy regardless of outer conditions. There are many benefits of a consistent meditation practice, including reduced stress and anxiety, improved health, greater intuition, compassion, awareness, and focus.

In this two week series, you will learn the Hong Sau technique of meditation. Hong Sau is designed to increase powers of concentration and introspection while helping to still the mind and calm the heart. The course also offers many tips on how to meditate effectively, establish a daily meditation routine, and how to integrate the benefits of meditation into daily life.

Lessons in Meditation is step one on the Path of Kriya Yoga. There are four steps leading to Kriya Yoga initiation. Kriya Yoga became widely known through Paramhansa Yogananda’s spiritual classic, Autobiography of a Yogi. It is a spiritual path that includes advanced meditation techniques that quickly accelerate one’s spiritual growth. Kriya Yoga works by giving the practitioner pranayama, or control of the life force. Through life force control, the yogi is able to overcome all of the obstacles preventing union with the Divine.

Paramhansa Yogananda taught Kriya Yoga as part of a spiritual path that includes other yoga practices. The Kriya technique itself is given after about 10 months of study and practice of the other techniques that are part of the Path of Kriya Yoga. Ananda Michigan offers Kriya Yoga initiation once a year in the fall. In preparation for taking the initiation, one must complete four levels of classes starting with Lessons in Meditation.

These classes are offered in person at the Lighthouse Center, 740 E. Shore Drive, Whitmore Lake, MI 48189 and on Zoom.

The cost for this course is $20. Payment is due before the first class on January 11, 2023. Payments can be made via PayPal through mike@limauro.com. Please provide your email address with your payment, so that Mike can send you the handout for the first class and the Zoom link if you won’t be attending in person.

The Essence of Self-Realization, Step Two on the Path of Kriya Yoga
Wednesday evenings, 7:30pm-9:30pm
February 8 through April 26, 2023

Though many people think of yoga primarily in terms of physical postures and exercises (hatha yoga), the term “yoga” properly refers to a comprehensive system of meditation and balanced spiritual living intended to unite the individual soul with the Infinite Spirit. Raja Yoga, which is also known as Royal Yoga, is a system of philosophy, meditation, yoga postures, breathing, healing, and diet that leads us to the realization of our highest Self. This course shows the interdependence of these seemingly separate areas and how all of them, when correctly approached, promote physical, mental, and emotional health and further our spiritual progress.

The principles of Self-Realization, consistently practiced, awaken us to our deepest reality of oneness with the Infinite and the experience of divine joy. As a spiritual art and science, Raja Yoga is unique in that it encourages us to test the truth of its principles, not simply to believe them. Using the many tools Raja Yoga gives us, we can determine first hand whether it lives up to its promise.

This course is based on the teachings of Paramhansa Yogananda, author of the spiritual classic Autobiography of a Yogi, and focuses on the essential principles of Self-Realization. In this 10 week course, you will learn how to deepen your meditation. You will discover how the inspired wisdom of the Bhagavad Gita integrates with a deeper understanding of Judeo-Christian beliefs. You will be introduced to the famous Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and his Eight-Fold Path, also known as Ashtanga Yoga. This course will benefit people who are new to yoga as well as experienced yogis who want to deepen their understanding and practice of yoga.

All classes begin at 7:30pm and end at 9:30pm. Here are the dates and descriptions for each class:

February 8, 2023 Week 1: Yoga Paths of Devotion, Action, Wisdom, and Meditation

February 15, 2023 Week 2: The Eight-Fold Path to Self-Realization

February 22, 2023 Week 3: Yamas and Niyamas: Donʼts and Doʼs on the Yoga Path

March 8, 2023 Week 4: Hong Sau Technique of Meditation

March 15, 2023 Week 5: Review of the first four weeks

March 22, 2023 Week 6: Affirmations: The Power of Thought and Mantra

March 29, 2023 Week 7: Tapping the Infinite Source of Energy and Magnetism

April 12, 2023 Week 8: Guru-Discipleship

April 19, 2023 Week 9: Pranayama and the Power of Kundalini

April 26, 2023 Week 10: Review of weeks 6 through 9 and discussion about the next steps on the Path of Kriya Yoga

The Essence of Self-Realization is step two on the Path of Kriya Yoga. There are four steps leading to Kriya Yoga initiation. Monthly Kriyaban Satsang
1st Wednesday evenings, 7:30pm-9:00pm

This satsang is intended to strengthen our sense of community as Yogananda’s disciples and kriyabans by supporting each other through our journey home to God. We have an opportunity to be one of the “small harmonious groups” that Master spoke of in 1945 as a model of peace and harmony to the world. Before we can inspire the world, we need to inspire ourselves and each other.

We will begin with a prayer to invoke the grace of God, pranayama to relax our bodies and quiet our minds, and chanting to awaken our hearts and deepen our devotion. We may share information intended to help deepen our kriya practice followed by a guided kriya yoga meditation. The host will be happy to answer any questions following our kriya practice.

Kriyabans, contact mike@limauro.com if interested in participating. The Zoom link will be sent individually.

Wisdom Satsang with Mike Limauro
Thursday evenings, 7:30pm-8:30pm THIS EVENT IS CANCELLED ON JUNE 1, 2023

Please join us for a weekly discussion of the wisdom teachings of Paramhansa Yogananda, one of the most important spiritual teachers of our time and author of the spiritual classic, Autobiography of a Yogi. We will begin each session with a short prayer and meditation to tune into divine guidance. Everyone will be invited to share topics they feel guided to discuss during our time together.

We will mindfully bring Yogananda’s teachings to bear on our discussions with an understanding that his teachings bring us a vision of true happiness based on the understanding that it is found within ourselves. He shows us that everyone can be courageous, calm, and confident to effectively deal with any difficulty life sends, because these are qualities of the soul. His teachings guide us to a new and brighter future, filled with inner freedom, purpose, and the realization of our own highest potential. His wonderful vision of life will inspire us to examine the divine potential of all our relationships. Always realistic, practical, and entertaining, Yogananda expresses the challenges we face and shares clear and powerful solutions. He emphasizes that success in life does not depend only upon natural ability. It also depends upon our determination to grasp the opportunity that is presented to us knowing that opportunities in life come by creation, not by chance.

Monthly Divine Will Healing with Mary Thomas
1st and 3rd Saturday mornings, 9:00am-10:15am

Our Divine Will Healing techniques originate from articles on yogic healing by Paramhansa Yogananda. Divine will is omnipresent, residing in every unit of Cosmic Energy or Universal Prana. An opening prayer, affirmation and simple devotional chant are followed by a short meditation. In this way, the heart and mind are prepared to offer individual and world prayers.

Paramhansa Yogananda, author of the spiritual classic, Autobiography of a Yogi, taught specific techniques for awakening healing energy within each individual. These techniques have been found to overcome physical, emotional, and spiritual difficulties including serious illnesses. He emphasized that we should use our God-given powers to heal ourselves and others, but not think of them as our own powers. He stated that darkness cannot remain where the Light is present. Attuning ourselves to God’s Light (that which is present in every atom of creation) through meditation, prayer, affirmation, and other means can drive away the darkness of disease in a person’s body, mind and soul.

Saturday, December 16, 2022, 6:30pm-7:45pm THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED

With all that is going on in the world around us during these times, it is too often the case that we feel that we are being drawn into negative currents. But this doesn’t have to be true. We can actually, at this time, be more dynamic instruments for positive qualities. Each of us can open up to our own individual growth, but also be more clear channels for those around us, and for the world at large.

Christmas Meditation Hosted by Ananda Michigan Ministers
Saturday, December 1, 2022, 8:00am-4:00pm

You’ll never think of Christmas the same way after you’ve experienced one of these “inner celebrations” of Christmas. Paramhansa Yogananda first began them for his disciples in the 1930s. Now, thousands around the world celebrate the season by meditating this way before Christmas.

Eight hours of meditation, chant, music and inspirational readings. The day is both deeply restful and the best possible way to get the most out of your devotional practice.

If you can only come for half the day, we break at 2:00 p.m. and start again at 2:30. So, come for the morning and stay through 2:00; or come for the afternoon and stay through 6:00. Better yet, come for the whole day and experience a full measure of Christ’s bliss.
